Camping in Occitanie

In Occitanie, the Mediterranean stretches along more than 200 kilometres of coastline. Long sandy beaches where you can lay down your towel, lively seaside resorts, harbours perfect for an evening stroll, as well as lagoons, wetlands and unspoilt natural areas: here, even the seaside is full of variety.

Sometimes, you only need to travel a few kilometres to discover a completely different side of Occitanie. The peaks of the Pyrenees, the rugged landscapes of the Cévennes, spectacular gorges, the limestone plateaus of Aveyron, the rolling countryside of Gers, rivers and lakes all make up a region where nature is constantly changing.

In the Pyrenees, trails lead to mountain lakes and iconic landscapes such as the Cirque de Gavarnie. Further north, the Gorges du Tarn and the Cirque de Navacelles invite you to take in the scenery from above. In Ariège, the adventure continues underground, where caves reveal traces left behind by prehistoric people.

Discovering Occitanie also means travelling back in time. From Roman remains and medieval citadels to characterful villages and the great cities of southern France, history is never far away.

In Carcassonne, the ramparts and towers of the famous medieval citadel dominate the city. In Nîmes, the amphitheatre and Maison Carrée still bear witness to its Roman heritage. Toulouse is instantly recognisable for its pink-brick façades and distinctive way of life, while Montpellier blends historic streets, lively squares and contemporary architecture.

Leave the cities behind and there is still plenty more to discover. The Canal du Midi crosses part of the region, winding between locks, towpaths and southern landscapes, while countless villages invite you to stop as you explore the roads of Occitanie.

An exceptional heritage also reflected in the many sites in Occitanie listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It is hard to discover Occitanie without sitting down to enjoy its food. Here too, every area has its own specialities, produce and traditions.

Along the coast, oysters and shellfish from the Étang de Thau sit alongside tielles from Sète and the flavours of Camargue cuisine. Further inland, cassoulet evokes Toulouse and the Lauragais, while aligot and Roquefort cheese tell the story of another side of Occitanie, in Aveyron and Aubrac. In Gers, foie gras and local produce are at the heart of a generous regional cuisine.

Not forgetting the vineyards found across much of the region. Markets, covered markets, producers, restaurants and local eateries offer plenty of opportunities to experience another side of Occitanie during your holiday.

A morning at the beach and a first paddleboarding session. A bike ride along a river. A cave to explore, a river to swim in or the animals at the Réserve Africaine de Sigean to spot… In Occitanie, there is no shortage of ways to share new discoveries with the children.
