Did you know?

Mimizan is a town steeped in history. In the 11th century, a community of monks built a church in the city, but all that remains of it today is the bell tower. Mimizan then became a “sauveté”, the name given to an area around a church where the most vulnerable could take refuge. In the Middle Ages, Mimizan became an important stage on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

It was only in 1784 that it became fashionable to bathe in the sea. After the success of Arcachon and Biarritz, which became popular destinations for the aristocracy, Mimizan decided in turn to embrace seaside tourism.

What can you do while camping in Mimizan?

Mimizan offers a perfect mix of land and ocean. In fact, the seaside resort is split into two districts: Mimizan-Bourg (or town) on one side, and Mimizan-Plage (or beach) on the other. Together, these two districts host a vast variety of activities.

Start your stay with some time spent relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Mimizan. Discover Le Courant beach, always very popular with families. Although its name might suggest otherwise, there’s no current at this beach! Which makes it the perfect sandy spot for days with the family, fishing or practising your stand-up paddleboarding skills. Surfing or kite surfing fans can indulge in their favourite sport along the South Beach. The perfect spot for some adrenalin-fuelled thrills! You can also enrol in one of the many watersports schools. They can be found on all the beaches, and offer lessons and equipment hire for all levels.

Spend the rest of your day exploring on a hike. For this, we can recommend two stand-out destinations: Lake Aureilhan and the Mailloueyre lagoons. At the first, you can enjoy a walk through a haven of peace, in the midst of the Landes pine trees, with views of the lake. At the latter, you’ll discover a 12 km trail through the Landes forest, along with some unique fauna and flora. To finish off, you’ll admire the dunes and the ocean.

Mimizan is also a paradise for cyclists, with myriad trails that wind their way through the surroundings. Visit the region as you pedal along the local section of the Vélodyssée cycle route. It’ll take you from one beach to another and lets you discover the wooded trails. Another idea for an excursion on foot is the “floral walk”. Stroll along the shores of Lake Aureilhan, surrounded by 400 species of flowers, shrubs and other plants.

Hop over to Mimizan-Bourg and head for its town centre, home to a host of enticing souvenir shops. You’ll also find plenty of restaurants serving delicious local cuisine. History buffs should take the time to visit and admire the bell tower-porch of the former Sainte-Marie-de-Mimizan church. This jewel dates from the Middle Ages and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Complete your visit with a tour of the Mimizan Priory Museum, at the same site.
