Vieux-Boucau has not always enjoyed the luxury of an ocean and lake on its doorstep. Until the 16^th century, the village was crossed by the River Adour. However, in 1578, the river was diverted towards Bayonne to improve navigation and prevent flooding. The former Adour riverbed became the marine lake we know today, giving Vieux-Boucau its unique geography.
