What to do on a camping holiday in the Var

Situated on the Côte d’Azur, the Var is well-known for its proximity to the Mediterranean and Provence. While the city of Toulon,  the department's most important metropolis, is very popular with tourists, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, made popular by Brigitte Bardot, is famous all over the world. So wherever you are, make the most of the coastline of the Var and of its variety of inlets, harbours and beaches beneath the hillsides, in a warm and sun-drenched climate. On the agenda: visit the Porquerolles and Port-Cros Islands, take a dip in the crystal-clear water and enjoy some watersports including kitesurfing and jet skiing etc. Have a go at scuba diving, or just enjoy the scenery and wander around the villages.

And to do this, there's nothing quite like a bit of hiking, which is one of the region's top activities. If you're enjoying a camping holiday in Fréjus, then head for the Esterel Massif, a real must-see while you're here. Take the Cape Roux path, get up high and take in the breathtaking views, combining the blue sea, the green vegetation and the red rocks! On the edge of the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône, north of Toulon, the Sainte-Baume Massif is a limestone outcrop that's full of mysteries. Make the most of it all by discovering the famous Grotte de Sainte Marie-Madeleine. If you prefer cycling to walking, you can hire a bike at one of our campsites or at the Gulf of St Tropez, where you'll find all sorts of hiring options.

Inland, meanwhile, come and see the Haut-Var and its hillside villages, gorges and rivers, for a properly nature-focused outing! Make the most of just getting away from it all here, with big hikes through the forest or a spot of canoeing or kayaking with your family or friends, and you'll be in for some really unforgettable times. Come and discover the Gorges du Verdon, which are almost as impressive as the Grand Canyon! This splendid breach through the lush mountains looks out over the turquoise sea.

For a culture-focused stay, this department is overflowing with gems: Fréjus, City of Art and History; Le Thoronet abbey and the Basilica of Saint-Maximin-le-Baume are some of top ones.

Before summer arrives, come and see the Saint-Mandrier fishermen's festival and try some local dishes at the Fête de la Cuisine et des Papilles in Six-Four-les-Plages. The Var combines a gentle pace of life, a welcoming atmosphere and lots of wellness!
