A closer look at Louhans Market

On Monday, the pace of life in Louhans is dictated by its extraordinary market. Louhans Market is one of the largest markets in France. This is evidenced by the fact that over 200 traders set up their stalls in the town centre, creating the market’s bustling atmosphere.

Louhans Market is a real tradition. A custom that dates back to the Middle Ages. There has been a market in the town since the 15th century… And it was still held on Monday! In the past, livestock, butter, eggs and even fabric were traded at the market. Now the market comprises a clothing market, an organic market and a farmers’ market, offering high quality Bresse produce, such as its famous chicken.

The food market is situated in the town, between Place du Général de Gaulle and Place Bertrand Thibert, close to the covered market. The clothing market is located near the Grande Rue with its beautiful arcades. The street becomes a pedestrian zone on market days. There is even a dedicated market for chicken which stands in two locations: Champ de Foie and Place de la Charité. Finally, the organic market can be found in Rue de la Grenette.

It’s the perfect place to do some shopping or sample local dishes: don’t miss the chance to visit Louhans Market during your camping holiday. If you’re around on Easter Monday or Whit Monday, make sure to stop by. The market is extremely popular on these dates. Over 15,000 people visit each year.
