Anglet is a French municipality which forms part of the district of Bayonne. It lies on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is the second largest town in the French Basque Country, with more than 37,000 inhabitants. Also known as "Little California", the municipality has 11 beaches of fine sand. Some are reserved for surfers, while other slightly more urban ones provide a venue for summer events (concerts, shows, etc.) and are lined with many bars and restaurants.
You will also find some beaches that are slightly wilder, providing the perfect setting for a walk. And of course, some quieter beaches that are perfect for family outings. That way there is something for everyone! Important information: for safety reasons, 8 beaches are supervised by 80 lifeguards during the summer months.
If you are on holiday at one of our Yelloh! Village campsites near Anglet, you will have the opportunity to visit Biarritz and Bayonne: two nearby towns. Like Anglet, these municipalities are fine examples of the Basque culture and spirit.
In former times, the municipality's main activity was farming. Today, the seaside resort is famous for its excellent cider, as well as its wine. In addition to these beverages, which have a long-standing tradition in the Basque Country, there is a growing number of microbreweries. Anglet is also famous for its green chilli pepper, a competitor to the famous Espelette chilli pepper. And there is also Balea beer, brewed in Anglet itself. Many local products can be found at the Halles covered market as well as at the market on Quintaou esplanade.
If you have chosen to enjoy a holiday at one of our Yelloh! Village campsites in the Basque Country, it is partly because of its location and because of its environment. In Anglet, the wealth of activities is a great advantage. And of course, in view of its beachside location, the main activity is surfing! With its many internationally renowned surfing spots, several competitions are organised during the summer and autumn months. Surfing schools are also available for the more daring interested in trying a new sport.
Fancy a family cycling excursion? It's possible! About twenty kilometres of cycle paths are available for you to follow allowing you to discover Anglet from a variety of angles. And there is a route available for all levels, whether it is by the ocean, along the cliffs, which offer slightly more technical rides, or in the forest along its greenways. You don't have a bike? Don't panic! You can always rent one.
On the Basque Coast, a great deal of time is spent in, on and under the water. But also in the forest. Anglet is also a very dynamic town. So, if you are staying at one of our Basque campsites, you will find plenty to do there... By day as well as by night! Tour some exhibitions, play a round of pitch and putt, dance, skate, swim in the pool, pay a visit to the cinema, attend concerts or shows, etc. There is plenty entertainment on offer, especially during the summer months.
Anglet is also a family destination and it is perfect for you to treat your children. The town makes it easy for you to choose thanks to the array of sites and activities that will guarantee your little ones some truly great moments.
