A historic capital, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is the island’s beating heart. A charming coastal village, it is surrounded by ramparts with its harbour located at its centre. Stroll around its small streets and discover the many local heritage treasures: the Hôtel de Clerjotte and the half-timber Maison de la Vinatrie dating from the 16th century.

Along the way, you will be able to admire the Citadel, built and fortified by Vauban in 1681 and 1685, which used to hold prisoners on their way to the penal colonies. Pay a visit to the Ernest Cognacq Museum where the island’s art and history are presented.

You will definitely enjoy touring the town centre with its rich history. Settle down on a terrace with a drink and spend time admiring the many white houses combined with the colours of the sky and savour this village’s peaceful way of life!
