The town of Fátima is not far from Lisbon in the centre of Portugal. Christians around the world know it as one of the religion’s most important places of pilgrimage. The town became famous in 1917 after the Virgin Mary appeared several times to three shepherd children and following the Miracle of the Sun on 13 October 1917. These events led to the construction of the Sanctuary of Fátima, which includes the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of the Apparitions where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Each of these monuments will surprise and astound you.
Once you have been amazed by the beauty and history of these places of worship, set off and explore the town’s other treasures as you enjoy your holiday in Portugal. For nature lovers, there is the Das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park just a few kilometres outside the town. As well as the beautiful, authentic scenery, there are 1,500 incredible caves to explore in the park. Venture underground! Which one will impress you most? The Mira de Aire cave, which sinks to a depth of over 110 metres, is reputed to be one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal. An ideal excursion for the whole family.
Continue your discovery of the town’s surroundings with a trip along the Castle Route, and enjoy a series of legends, stories and mysteries. Just 12 kilometres from the town, you’ll find the castle of Ourém, which offers an outstanding view of the medieval town of Ourém and the town of Fátima. So, have you made up your mind? Think your next holiday in Portugal will be near the town of Fatimá?
