Spending your holidays at the Ilbarritz Yelloh! Village is to embark on an exploration of the Basque country, its exoticism, culture, scenery and the Atlantic coast or the Pyrenees. Come for a walk around our beautiful towns, like Biarritz or Bayonne, or even Donostia (San Sebastian) in Spain. Come and feast yourself on our specialities and admire our pelota champions.
Four kilometres from the campsite, come for a stroll around Biarritz. With its Englishness and its aspects of the Belle Epoque, its visitors are all enchanted by its fine houses, the promenade along the Grande Plage, the Hôtel du Palais, the Port-Vieux, thalassotherapy, and the Esplanade du Phare. A residence worthy of kings... which has now captivated the surfers. Since the 50s, Biarritz has been the surfing capital this side of the Atlantic. The great breakers, and the joy of the slide on your surfboard or bodyboard are yours for the taking. Come and get intoxicated by the sun, the wind and the salt water.
On the Basque country's most famous mountainside, a small rack railway takes you to the summit at 8km/hr. From the top, you'll have the most stunning panorama over the Atlantic, the Pyrenees, and the Bidassoa valley. You'll be able to spot the marvellous Basque pottock ponies, which live on mountains around the Rhune.
Inspired by ancient rural practices, the Force Basque, is a competition between villages. Its main events include: tug-of-war, stone lifting, handcart lifting, a corn-sack relay, throwing bales of straw, vertical tree-trunk chopping, transport de bidons (or "who can carry 41 kilos in each hand the furthest?"). Come and see the teams confronting each other. Come and watch a game of "cesta-punta", "grand chistera" or "main nue". Pelota, famous even on the other side of the Atlantic, is one of the oldest Basque games. Every village has its pelota wall or a trinquet where young and old indulge in their favourite sport.
The Basque country has a whole range of renowned produce: sheeps' cheese, Espelette pepper, and the famous Bayonne ham,... Boasting a gastronomic heritage that reflects their exoticism, the Basques know how to prepare their "a la Basque" dishes, combining tomatoes, peppers, garlic and onions, all seasoned with a dash of pepper. Come and try the famous "piperade", softened sweet green peppers in an omelette or scrambled with eggs; or peppers stuffed with cod, all washed down with a local white wine.
Cross the border and venture as far as Donostia (San Sebastian in Spanish), the jewel of the Spanish Basque seaside resorts. The summer capital of the Spanish since the Belle Epoque, it enjoys the mild climate of the Bay of Biscay and a mountainous hinterland. You'll come here for our beautiful beaches, and the gastronomic delights in the pintxos (local tapas) bars. Donostia is also popular for its culture with its festival of music and cinema, and many fiestas such as Semana Grande, Carnaval or the "Caldereros".
