Did you know?

The Aquitaine region, highly coveted in the past, was ruled by the English crown for three centuries and was one of the causes of  the Hundred Years' War. It was in the former province of Guyenne that Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of the most influential figures in Europe in the Middle Ages, married Henry II, Duke of Normandy, who became King of England in 1154.

The Aquitaine and Bordeaux became English and resisted the many assaults led by various kings of France wishing to seize back the territory: Philip Augustus, Charles VII. The war ended in 1453 and the province was returned to the French crown in 1475 with the Treaty of Picquigny.

Even today, many traces of this interminable war are still visible in the Aquitaine, particularly in the Dordogne, where many castles were built along the border between the two former kingdoms.
