Campsite Gavarnie

Visiting the Hautes-Pyrénées? Come and create fabulous memories with a visit to Gavarnie and its remarkable destinations.

 Have you been to Gavarnie?

Gavarnie is an ancient French town, situated in the Hautes-Pyrénées department. On 1 January 2016, it became a sub-division of the new municipality of Gavarnie-Gèdre.  It is a small village at an altitude of 1400 m, which is very isolated, upstream from the valley carved out by the Gave de Gavarnie.

A side road provides access to the Spanish border via the Port de Boucharo. Gavarnie offers architectural heritage, cultural traditions and a warm welcome... Enough to convince you to holiday at one of our Yelloh! Village campsites in the Pyrénées.

Did you know…?

Where the peaks reach for the sky, come and marvel at a region brimming with authenticity, traditions and breathtaking landscapes... The Gavarnie Valleys have been famous since the 19th century, when English nobles, drawn to the views and warm, natural waters, made this area a popular tourist destination. It must be said that Gavarnie has a long-established reputation. Many botanists, scientists, romantics, painters, poets and athletes in search of a challenge have made this village the birthplace of what is known as "Pyreneism".

The cirque became legend when Victor Hugo described it as an " impossible and extraordinary object" in one of his poems. During your stay at one of our Yelloh! Village campsites in the Hautes-Pyrénées, you’ll have the chance to admire the Cirque de Gavarnie, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe with its 413 m vertical drop.

Speaking of water, it's everywhere! It has been used to heal both the body and mind since time immemorial. In the villages, the washhouses and mills were lively places. Water power has been used to generate electricity, making the Pyrénées an ideal mountain range for water harvesting.

Activities

Do you want to take in all the sights during your stay at our Yelloh! Village campsites? Then visit the Cirque de Gavarnie in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Culminating at an altitude of 3000 m and boasting one of Europe’s highest waterfalls, it is well worth the visit. If you have the stamina for lengthy hikes, you can also explore its two neighbours, the Troumouse and Estaubé cirques, as well as the legendary Roland’s Breach.

Gavarnie-Gèdre combines the calm of the mountains with the joys of the snow... If you like winter sports, you've come to the right place. Skiing is one of the main activities in the region.  With breathtaking views, you can enjoy a variety of routes for all levels. You’ll also have the chance to tackle the longest green run in the Pyrénées. 6 km downhill, a dream!

Of course, you can also explore this white paradise on foot or even snowshoes, for less adventurous visitors.

During the summer months, Gavarnie is also a must-visit destination. Known as a hiking paradise, the cirque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can spend your days strolling around admiring the fauna and flora that surround you... Just don't forget to look up and marvel at the magnificent mountain landscapes too.

After a day of hiking, nothing beats a hearty meal. If you’re a meat-lover, you've come to the right place! The Gavarnie Valleys are renowned for their sheep farms, which favour long-established traditions, as opposed to industrial production.

During the summer, you can attend a high altitude theatre festival, a theatre with exceptional natural beauty, offering a unique artistic experience. A family activity for all ages!

In need of some relaxation? The spas and thermal baths of Argelès-Gazost, Barèges and Cauterets are close by, so you can end the day in tranquillity.

To put it briefly: it’s impossible to be bored while on holiday in the Hautes-Pyrénées! All year round, the area has everything you need for an unforgettable holiday!
