Focus on the salt marshes of the Île de Ré
Lying in the Charente-Maritime and more particularly on the Île de Ré, the salt marshes have become a true symbol of the island. In times past, the island’s marshes employed over 1,000 salt-workers. Today, only a hundred or so continue to keep the age-old salt industry alive. As it evaporates, the seawater in the various ponds leaves its salt behind, a natural product then harvested by the “sauniers”.
