Closeup on Le Croisic Océarium

Le Croisic Océarium is one of France's most popular aquariums. With an area of natural seawater of 2,500m³, it is home to 600 species, in 56 separate aquariums. The aim is to protect these aquatic animals and care for them, as well as to raise people's awareness about animal behaviour and man's relationship with sea life.

This venture has enjoyed success since it opened in 1968. At that time, designers  had erected a little aquarium in their shop, so that customers had something fun to look at while they waited. 4 years later, the first Aquarium arrived. Le Croisic Océarium then followed in 1992.

On the menu

The Océarium invites you to see the 11 areas, known here as “escales” (stop offs):

  • Les raies du Pacifique (Pacific rays): given over to the 4 species found in the largest of the oceans.
  • Le lagon (the lagoon): where you'll find more than 100 species that live in the Coral reefs.
  • Les requins d’Australie (sharks of Australia): one of the most impressive aquariums, whether this is due to its 19 sharks of different species or to its size, measuring as it does 18 metres in length and 14 metres in width.
  • Le tunnel: fish from the depths.
  • Le Nautilus: inspired by the work of Jules Verne, featuring horseshoe crabs, trevallies and jellyfish.
  • La nurserie : area devoted to the first moments of life.
  • Belle-Île: area given over to the invertebrates of the island of Belle-Île.
  • Les Cyclades: the fish of the Mediterranean.
  • Vancouver: its creeks and lakes, featuring the winds of the northern Pacific.
  • L’Île d’Yeu: with fish that'll be familiar ones, but the behaviour of which may surprise you!

There is also a variety of entertainment available every day, including penguin feeding time (11am, 3pm and 5pm) and octopus feeding time at 11.30am. There is also a presentation featuring the sharks of Australia which takes place every day at 3.30pm. The purpose of this show is to explain peoples' misconceptions about these incredible animals, which are wrongly deemed to be dangerous. This is an occasion that can really be enjoyed be people of all ages.

And if you're feeling a bit peckish and you've come to Le Croisic with the family and for the day, there's a picnic area available too.
