The Festa del Carme in L’Escala

This maritime procession of the Virgin Carmen takes place on 16th July, and every year draws thousands of followers in an atmosphere that combines reverence with festivities. The Festa del Carme starts with the presentation of the carpet of salt. This is when the ceremony assumes its full meaning: the Virgin leaves the harbour and heads off towards la Platja, while the procession chases down to the church.
