The current territory of the Hautes-Pyrénées, formerly called Bigorre, is closely linked to Caesar and his conquests. His people, the Bigorrians, were subjugated by Lieutenant Crasus. The present village of Cieutat is said to be the former capital of Bigorre, “Bigarra”, and many Roman roads can still be seen today. You can head for Capvern or follow the route connecting Bagnères-de-Bigorre to Vallon du Serris.

Then, take a break in Arreau, one of the region’s most charming villages. The town hall-covered market building and the Maison des Lys are both worth a visit. They bear witness to historical heritage that dates back to the Middle Ages and are still well-preserved today.

 

And don’t forget to visit Tarbes, the capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées! This lovely city welcomes you with a host of delicious restaurants, parks – including the Massey Garden – and plenty of historic monuments. Take a break for lunch and sample the local gastronomy:Tarbais beans, Noir de Bigorre pork, Garbure or Madiran - a full-bodied and robust wine.
