Discover the sea life at the Oniria aquarium

Discover the underwater world with all the family at Oniria, the aquarium in Canet-en-Roussillon. Get close up to many species, including some magnificent sharks, at this brand-new facility.

Focus on Oniria

Oniria is the new aquarium in the town of Canet-en-Roussillon. It replaces the old aquarium, created in 1983. The latter, which had been set up in an old fishery, was no longer able to offer a high-quality visit. Therefore, the creator Patrick Masanet and the municipality decided to build a completely new facility. Oniria was created and opened its doors to the public on 10 July 2021.

Visitors are now welcomed in a 3,500 m² structure devoted to the world of the sea, with 83 tanks and over 600 different species. This upgrade offers you the chance to discover every aspect of the ocean depths with the aim being to help preserve the underwater world and its occupants by raising public awareness.

Oniria is also committed to an eco-responsible approach to limit its impact on the environment. For example, the aquarium favours the use of local natural resources. Thus, the structure is equipped with thalassothermy, a system that allows seawater to be used and controls its temperature.

Finally, Oniria is working with several institutions such as the CRIOBE research laboratory, the University of Perpignan and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on scientific studies. This work focuses on specific themes: global warming, ocean acidification, microplastics and anthropogenic pollution.

On the programme?

The visit to Oniria involves several stages with the aquarium divided up into 10 universes, all devoted to a specific fauna and/or theme. Each world is a complement to the others:

  • Mountain
  • Watercourses
  • Beach
  • Ocean Depths
  • Jungle
  • Lagoons and Reefs
  • Shark Kingdom
  • Water and Science
  • Land that Time Forgot
  • Water and People

Each day, you will also be able to watch several species being fed: sharks, piranhas, moray eels, octopuses and rays. In addition to feeding the animals, the keeps explain the specific dietary requirements of each of them.

Visiting Oniria is a great activity that will allow the whole family to learn more about the sea world!
