You'll be captivated by the Algarve, with its rich natural and historical heritage. Come and experience what it must have been like for the explorers by visiting the Sagres fortress and the port of Lagos, which is where the expeditions of Portugal's greatest seamen started from. Enjoy the fantastic view over the surrounding region from the top of the Serra de Monchique... And don't forget to have a stroll around the alleyways of Portugal's towns ...
From Ponta da Piedade (south of Lagos), with its fantastic views over the Atlantic, come and admire the coastline, which time and sea have sculpted in the rock, creating ochre-coloured cliffs which contrast with the turquoise blue of the sea...You can marvel at the strangely-shaped rocks, the small inlets which are inaccessible from land, lagoons and other enclaves which can be reached by boat...Your trip in Algarve won't disappoint you...
You can also even see dolphins and fish, both by boat, through an organised trip, or in one of the "Zoomarine" aquariums.
Close to our village, just 1km away, you can come and enjoy the charming town of Lagos, which is where Portugal's famous explorers departed from on board their caravels. The town, which has been used as a port for more than 2,000 years, is still filled with the spirit of the great travellers, who used Lagos as their departure point on their explorations. Various monuments and buildings hark back to this era: the fort of Ponta da Bandeira, built in the 12th century, which juts out into the sea, the old slave market, and, if you want to look further into the history of its explorers, a reproduction of an old caravel used by sailors of that time. You can go inside for a visit and, for half a day, experience what it must have been like for a sailor, pirate or privateer!
You can continue your exploration of Lagos by walking along its walls, strolling around the Marina, soothed by the sailing atmosphere...
You can also find out about Portuguese folklore, from the famous songs known as "Faldo" to Portuguese architecture, with its famous azulejos (blue ceramic tiles
Cape St. Vincent, "where the land ends and the sea begins" is the westernmost point in Europe, and has seen a number of naval battles. You'll find it an unusual place. The cliffs, which form a lunar landscape, have an amazing view over the ocean.
Not far from the Cape, the fortress of Sagres is a military building, which used to be a naval school and which was erected by a famous navigator. There are still some stone remains there to remind us about the explorations carried out by the Portuguese during the 15th century. You can also see the famous windrose, which has a diameter of 40 metres and which has withstood the sea winds over the centuries.
Thirty or so kilometres away, come and discover the Serra Monchique, a mountain chain whose highest peak rises to 902m. From there you can take in the fantastic views of the hinterland of the Algarve and its bay. Don't forget to pay a visit to the mountain villages and their traditional houses, as well as the spa town of Caldas de Monchique, perched on the mountainside and surrounded by greenery...A really calm and peaceful location...
A real mecca for surfers, kitesurfers and other water sports, Portimão and its large, fine sand beaches will give you a great breath of fresh air. It also has an active nightlife and you'll love its party atmosphere.
